Family Kitchen

Clever storage gives the impression of more space in this light kitchen. Kitchen essentials are stored in jars and displayed proudly on a row of built in shelves. The island unit is great for cooking while entertaining. Handy wicker baskets are tucked underneath to clear clutter.

The separate areas of this kitchen are defined by the exposed upright beam in the wall. The eating area has a relaxed feel, with wooden table and chairs, and simple crockery and glasses, while the cooking area has a cleaner, brighter look. Painted wall-mounted shelves in the cooking area are ideal for storing crockery overhead, and a mug tree takes up a minimum amount of space while putting pretty coffee mugs on display to complement the rustic feel of the room. A granite-coloured worktop cleverly blends the modern stainless-steel oven and fridge with the more classic painted units above.

Floor-to-ceiling cupboards make the best use of space here - rarely used items can be stored out of reach. If you prefer not to fit a hob or sink in your kitchen island, you might like to think about a built-in wine rack and wine fridge, like the one here - and the surface is nice and clear for sitting and eating at.

Knocking down walls to create more space brings light to this super-modern kitchen diner. A black island unit with bar stools is the hub of the kitchen and is perfect for breakfasts. Glossy black granite worktops contrast dramatically with the white walls, while block shelving provides extra storage.

White and stainless steel furnishings dominate this stylish, utilitarian kitchen. Using the original brick alcove to house a modern range is a functional and easy use of space. Wall-mounted rails have been fitted for easy access to utensils.

A large island is great for a family kitchen as children can be seated on high stools away from the hot oven, but still feel involved. Here, other practical elements are the huge glass splashback behind the hob and the low light over the island, which keeps the task area well-lit. Drawers and cupboards within the island are ideal for keeping teatowels, baking accessories and other essentials.

Painted cabinets are typical of country style and, when a pale colour is used, the whole scheme can seem very light and airy. Here, bench-style seating at the table is perfect for a family, and the natural wood finish balances well with the painted wood of the rest of the room. Rustic accessories such as the wooden heart hanging from a cupboard handle, give the room personality and make it feel homely and relaxed.

Colourful curtains and accessories give this kitchen dining area a bright and modern feel. The smart, plain units have a solid, timeless look that would work with most styles, so simply changing the curtains or bar stools would be an inexpensive way of updating the style in the future. White walls match the white surfaces, bringing the whole look together.
